Life is not just for living, it's to be enjoyed. Jackson County embraces this idea and personifies its fulfillment. Here are just a few entertaining activities to enjoy during a break in the hectic world we live in.

A Variety of Water Colors
As a coastal county, there is no end to water fun. Water skiing, wind surfing and sailing are popular activities. Jackson County is also home to a gigantic water and theme park for family enjoyment. The park includes a carousel, water slides, bumper boats, go-karts and one of the largest swimming pools in the South.

If fishing is your pleasure, you've found the perfect place. The County provides over 20 boat launching ramps throughout the area for easy access to the water. Take your boat or charter a trip to some of the greatest saltwater fishing in the Gulf of Mexico. If you prefer freshwater fishing, there is an abundance of rivers and bayous to explore. Maybe you'll discover your own "secret" fishing hole!

"Islanders" and "beach bums" will also enjoy many hours of fun and relaxation. The barrier islands in the Gulf are just minutes away by boat and provide for interesting weekend camping and explorations as well as clear gulf waters in which to swim and fish. For those who simply wish to laze around on the white sand, Jackson County provides spacious and scenic beach areas.

Art's Vast Spectrum
Jackson County's colorful history lends itself to artistic interpretation in various forms, including pottery and painting. The late Walter Anderson is one of Jackson County's most renowned artists. The Ocean Springs museum bearing his name and honoring his work is a popular attraction to both residents and tourists. Also, several art galleries and shops throughout the County display the work of both local and nationally known artisans.

All forms of cultural activities are represented in Jackson County. From the elegance of an impressive dance troupe performing "The Nutcracker Suite" to a number of local theater groups boasting modern to classical repertoires, residents delight in the area's cultural arts.

A Colorful History
History buffs can step back in time and view our many historical sites. Take a trip up the scenic yet "ghostly" Singing River where the legend is told of the demise of the Pascagoula Indians. This peace-loving tribe chose to drown themselves by walking hand-in-hand into the river while singing a death chant rather than fight the warring Biloxi Indians. Legend states that if you listen closely you can still hear the singing on a quiet night.

The Old Spanish Fort and Museum in Pascagoula is the oldest building in the Mississippi Valley. The building was actually built by the French in 1718 and is now home to nearly three centuries of Gulf Coast history and tradition. Another popular attraction is a 70-foot shrimp boat that has been converted into the Scranton Floating Museum. The boat offers its visitors informative environmental education. Experience a "hands-on" aquarium or explore the boat from bow to stern.

Spectacles of Color
Jackson County is host to many fun festivals every year, including the ever-popular Mardi Gras celebration. "Fat Tuesday" (Mardi Gras) is the event preceding the fasting and penance required during Lent. During this festive season, an endless array of parties, parades and costume balls mark this time of revelry.

Other entertaining annual events include Ocean Springs' historical reenactment of the 1699 landing of Pierre LeMoyne d'Ibervilie, as well as annual city celebrations, like the Zonta Arts & Craft Festival in Pascagoula, the Gautier Mullet Festival and the Moss Point River Jamboree. Also, no one can resist the rides, food, and fun at the annual Jackson County Fair. Each October, the Fair hosts local cooks preparing the tastiest gumbo and homemade pies around.

See Nature's True Colors
Outdoor life in the County is always a beautiful and educational experience. As one of Mississippi's 27 state parks, Jackson County's own Shepard State Park in Gautier provides its visitors with picnic areas, bike and nature trails, and areas for tent camping. The Mississippi Sandhill Crane National Wildlife Refuge and the Pascagoula Wildlife Management Area are popular wildlife refuges that are open to hikers, bird watchers or anyone who wants to soak up the peace and beauty of nature. Campers will also enjoy the beautiful Gulf Islands National Seashore Park in Ocean Springs, one of the most scenic areas on the Gulf Coast.

Another major part of outdoor life is hunting and South Mississippi is home to a variety of wild game. Numerous plugs and land leases, both public and private, are available for hunters to use during the different hunting seasons.

The Greens Are Calling
Coast residents are lucky to enjoy a climate that allows outdoor life year round. This mild weather greatly contributes to the popularity of golf. Jackson County boasts seven championship golf courses that are open for play, including the county-owned course located in Hurley. All of the courses are beautifully kept and offer a challenge to players of all skill levels. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned player, we've got the links to suit your game.

If tennis is your "racket," numerous public and private facilities offer year-round access. Several USTA-certified leagues are available for the whole family to join. In addition to the well-maintained tennis courts, many of the County parks include jogging tracks and nature trails to enjoy. Also, two yacht clubs in the area provide tennis, swimming and boat slips for member usage.

Shades of Dinner and Dance
Exciting activities always seem to work up a healthy appetite, and Jackson County dishes up some of the tastiest cuisine around. Whether you prefer casual dining or the elegance of fine dining, you'll always have a variety of excellent choices. And don't worry about those dinner calories, we've got some great places to work off that meal. Whatever your musical taste, there are nightclubs that offer the dancing you love.

And Much More...
In addition, there are various indoor recreational facilities such as theaters, bowling alleys and skating rinks. And, of course, shopping is a favorite pastime. From a large scale shopping mall to quaint, oak-lined shops in the downtown areas, Jackson County has it all. Antique hunters and craft enthusiasts will find an array of shops to wander through as well.

As a matter of fact, there's so much to do and see in Jackson County, you'll just have to take your time and explore all the possibilities. No matter what you decide to do, you'll have a fabulous time. We guarantee it.
